Heart of a Community
Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School has been a focal point of the Madison Valley neighborhood for nearly 100 years.
The school first opened as Harrison school in 1913. It received substantial renovations and additions in 1958, resulting the building you see today. In 1974 it was renamed for Martin Luther King, Jr.

The school served as the heart of the Madison Valley community. Many residents who have lived in the neighborhood for decades attended the school. It was a place where kids first learned to read, where the community held events such as the annual spaghetti dinner, and where people came to meet and vote.
In 2007, the Seattle School district closed the school, and in early 2008 it announced its decision to sell or lease the MLK facility. See more on the history of the school in our pdf document by clicking
